1. Daikoku Festival

Date: 1/26-27 Sat-Sun 10am-4pm

Location: Kanda Myoujin (near Ochanomizu and Akihabara station)

As home to two of the Seven Gods of Fortune, many people visit Kanda Myojin for their first prayers of the year (Hatsumode). The Daikoku Festival, the shrine's first festival of the year, celebrates the Daikokuten (one of the Seven Gods of Fortune along with Ebisu). On Saturday at 10, primarily individuals who have recently come of age as well as high school students to the elderly take part in a chilling purification ceremony where participants douse themselves in ice water. On Sunday at noon, hocho-shiki—a tradition in Japanese cuisine hailing from the Heian period— a ceremonial slicing of a big carp by masters in the art will take place. Start off your year right and take part in this traditional festival with your whole family!

 

2. Nabegoya 2019

Date: ~1/27 11am-9:30pm

Location: Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse

There's nothing like gathering with friends and family around a steaming pot of the season's harvest and fresh catch. At this annual Nabe event in Yokohama, you can make your own hot pot or select one of the many famous hot pots from various regions across Japan to enjoy. 3. NAOJ Mitaka Stargazing 

Location: National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (Mitaka)
