Babysitter of the Month: Tharani

2018-12-19
This month, we'd like to introduce you to Tharani!

Tharani came from Sri Lanka to Japan about a year ago to first learn Japanese and is hoping to continue her studies here in Japan. Tharani is bilingual in English and Sinhala and is currently working hard on her Japanese.

Having grown up with many younger relatives, Tharani first got started babysitting as a teenager. She babysat her younger relatives of ages 5-6 whenever their parents were busy and soon began volunteering at a nursery as an assistant teacher. Meanwhile, Tharani also became a member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, which aims to "enable girls and young women to develop their fullest potential as responsible citizens of the world." There, Tharani led a troop of 8 girls for 4 years! Before coming to Japan, she also volunteered at a primary school for 6 months. When she was in Sri Lanka, Tharani babysat twin girls for 2 years since they were just 7 months old.

When it comes to caring for children, Tharani believes that the key is to always be kind and understanding to their needs. Having competed in many sports competitions as a student, Tharani loves getting active with kids. She also loves to sing and dance with them we well as let off steam running around the park with them.

Families who have worked with Tharani describe her as friendly, attentive and earnest. Multiple parents have been surprised to find that their kids warmed up to Tharani right away despite usually being shy.

We asked Tharani to answer a few questions to get to know her better:

What drew you to babysitting?

My love for small children and babies!

What do you like about working with CareFinder?

CareFinder is a very friendly team and they always help me figure out even the most minor confusions.

What do you like best about babysitting?

The love I feel from the babies I babysit.

What do you find most challenging about babysitting?

At the beginning, becoming friendly with the child or baby can be difficult. I have been lucky in that it has come easily so far.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I love to travel.  I like exploring new things, meeting new people, getting to know different traditions and mainly trying out different types of food.

In what ways have working with kids impacted your life?

Kids often perceive the world differently than adults. Working with kids has opened my eyes to many different ways of seeing the world.

Do you have any fond memories or stories from babysitting?

I am currently babysitting twin babies every week and the excitement on their face whenever they see me coming fills my heart with joy.

Do you have anything you'd like to tell us?

I am so glad that I joined CareFinder as it has given me the opportunity to do what I love most in a very convenient way. A big thank you to the team for helping me with any questions or problems I had.
