I've worked with kids (of all ages) so much that I feel compelled to wave and smile at kids, even stranger's kids. This is an occupational hazard, for sure! Sometimes when I see a troubled mom dealing with a child in the middle of a major meltdown, I discreetly swoop in to help. As a parent myself, I know how hard it is to deal with an unreasonable seeming tot (to themselves, they are being totally reasonable, of course!) so I can really sympathize with parent's having an "off day" with the kids while out. Usually parents are startled but when they realize I'm just there to help defuse the situation, are eternally grateful.
My own daughter is 11 at the moment so I am only able to take on jobs during the daytime on weekdays. That and I have some other part-time jobs as well. I am a professional baker so the kids I watch are usually spoiled by treats and we often do cooking lessons together!
I am a native English-speaker and able to speak conversational Japanese. I also speak conversational Mandarin. I know Spanish but it's getting quite rusty. I can listen but speaking has become slightly challenging.
I'm from the States, lived in Canada and have been in Japan for almost two decades. I am well-known in any community I live in as the "mommy who is friends with all the kids in the neighborhood." Firm but playful. Encouraging and fun.
I'm a "kid" at heart and feel honored to be a part in any child's life, influencing them for a lifetime! As a mom myself, I understand how important it is to find a good sitter for one's child. One who is reliable, has good principles, and can be trusted with the most precious things ever!
Activities I do with kids: I love doing crafts, cooking, playing with play dough, making play dough, painting, playing tag, teaching kids to bike or skate, board games, tutoring or writing practice...the list is endless. I am a professional baker so I sometimes get requests from families to bake with the kids. Cream puffs, crepes, strawberry shortcake are common favorites! For a fun activity, we make Japanese desserts like wobbly warabi mochi or strawberry daifuku. I like to stress to kids that it's important to fail at least 3 times before getting good results. Growth mindset is something I like to encourage. Even now, I continuously study early child education and am constantly reading up on how to raise a child, manage/work with a child, communicate effectively with a child/young adult. It's exciting for me and such a dynamic field! (I feel like a bit of a geek writing this...not sure if everyone shares the same enthusiasm as me)
I almost forgot to add that I am a fan of slow foods. While I allow my daughter packaged foods, I rarely buy them for her and consider them a very occasional treat. In my first two years in Japan, I ate without caring much about what was in the food. I figured Japanese food was all reasonably healthy. Much to my chagrin...after 1.5 years of living on "healthy" Japanese food...my annual health check was at an all time low and the doctor was astounded at how fast my health had declined. He was in awe at how much my health had changed in a mere 1+ years. I pinned it down to a) convenience store foods and b) supermarket pre-made foods and c) packaged or even junky bakery bread. I educated myself and found out even "preservative-free" items here in Japan are not truly so. Less than 5% or things that are not technically preservatives can be used. That and sub-ingredients are rarely/never listed. After eating right, my health check numbers went back to normal, thank goodness. My friends may call me a health nut but I still enjoy chocolate (every day!) and love eating delicious food at restaurants. I let the children I care for eat anything they want but unless upon request, I only prepare wholesome slow foods for them. I also
usually slightly reduce the salt in my cooking and people can adjust it accordingly when they eat it. From a young age, my daughter's friends have always looked forward to coming over as they can always eat something nice that they cannot eat elsewhere.
I've listed my hourly rate on this website but it's negotiable. My basic schedule (available hours) is noted on this website but they are also flexible and open to negotiation. I can work some evenings or weekends, depending on my own family's schedule. I don't have a cancellation policy at the moment but please respect my time as well. If I have accepted a job, it means I have cleared my schedule (work and family) to work for you. Thanks for your understanding of this.
